After the Dunkirk evacuation, all children in the channel coast area were compulsorily evacuated. I was at Mundella Primary School in Folkestone and we were sent by train to a school at Senghenydd in Wales. In 1942 I won a school scholarship and was transferred to Aberfan and was with a lovely Welsh family, Mr and Mrs Roberts in Oakfield Road.

It was at this time there was an appeal from the Prime Minister鈥檚 wife, Mrs Clementine Churchill, for schoolgirls to knit gloves, scarves and hats for our allies the Russian forces.

I joined with my two friends Gladys and Pamela and knitted a large number and sent them to 10 Downing street for Mrs Churchill. To our pleasant surprise a hand-written letter arrived from Mrs Clementine Churchill on No.10 Downing Street letter heading thanking us:

Dear Gladys, Pamela and Dorothy,
Thank you very much for your gift which I have just received. I am most grateful to you for the trouble you have taken to help the heroic Russians in their terrible but victorious struggle against the wicked invaders of their country.

Clementine S. Churchill鈥�
