Before I went abroad I was given 7 days leave to travel home to Belfast. I was returning to England after leave, it was in December and the weather and sea was very rough and it was snowing. We were told to put on our life jackets, but it was very stuffy down below and my friend with whom I was travelling and I decided to go on deck. I think the ship was called the Royal Daffodil. We stood on deck with the water swimming over our feet and the snow still falling overhead and wearing our life jackets. When we got to Stranraer, we were absolutely soaking and frozen and to make matters worse, there was no heating in the train. Some time later we heard that that night was the last a U Boat had been spotted in the Clyde and therefore the reason why we had to wear our life jackets.
