Jim Holley was awarded the 1939 to 1945 French and Germany Star for service in the Royal Engineers during WWII. He also received the Silver Medal of the Order of Orange Nassau (Netherlands) on 18th July 1947. The reason for this award still remains somewhat of a mystery. However, some of his friends say that he supervised the building of a bridge from redundant telegraph poles to restore communication and supplies to an isolated island in Holland. The location is unknown.

His friend, John Bray served as a cook in the same company and has kept diaries of his experiences during training and eventual travel to Holland and Germany.
