I was born in Sturgeons Way, Hitchin, and was 9 years old when I remember a bomb dropping on a house in Orchard Way near the Sailor Boy pub. I remember walls in Orchard Road being peppered with machine gun fire.

Bombs were also dropped on the train track by Wilbury Bridge and the ground is still chalky where they fell.

I remember them having anti-aircraft guns on the farm, owned by Chennells, up the top of Highover.

A doodle-bug was also dropped on a farm in Preston or Pirton.
