This story was submitted to the People's War website by Susie, on behalf of Margaret. Margaret fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

During the war I was evacuated to relatives at Kilcreggan. Whilst I was there a cargo vessel called ‘Pissaro’, part of the McAndrew shipping line became lost off the coast of Portugal and ended up in Kilcreggan. Two boys and a girl from the area befriended the crew and acted as posties for the families of the crew who were based in the Midlands. They would send mail directly to the house at Kilcreggan and the boys would row out to the ship. Whilst there the boys helped with painting and the girl brought the log up to date in the wheelhouse, and took flowers for the crew from the garden of the house (also a Cairn Terrier who tried to steal bones from the galley)!
