Working in the centre of London meant that I had to find my midday meal somewhere near to the office. My favourite choice was the British Restaurant that was located in Farrindon Road Library. Cheap meals were provided, although having a rather bland menu that included ‘Woolton Pie’!
Other times, a sandwich lunch was sufficient to keep me going and allowing a visit to St Bride’s swimming baths, sitting on the embankment alongside where H.M.S. Chrysanthemum and other ships were moored, these being used for training purposes and also offices. The Barrage Balloon within the confines of the Temple Inns garden was also a source of lunch time entertainment – sitting there waiting for one or two of the WAAF operators to take off into space hanging on the guy ropes!
