My grandfather was a radio operator and a line repairman for the U.S. army. He enlisted in the army in 1941 and was sent to Newcastle shortly afterward. He spent several months there preparing for the Normandy invasion. He has told me many stories about his time in Europe during the war. Once, he was sent to guard a road in Belgium. He lay hidden on the shoulder of the road when he heard a noise. He was clutching his gun in fright, scared that it might be one of the enemy and that he would have to shoot his weapon. He stared out from his hiding place and saw a group of Belgian teenagers walking along the road a laughing. All he could think was, "Here I am, thousands of miles from home, scared and homesick, and these kids are having a grand old time while I'm risking my life for them." My grandfather always remembered that story, and would tell it to his grandchildren often. He told us lots of other stories and I'll try to remember them to write down later.
