My friend's husband was in the tank core in Italy during the war. He always told the story about the Americans who were flying to one of the soldier's hometown and gave him a lift. As a result of this his wife had a baby, but ofcourse they had to be silent about his visit otherwise the Americans would have been in deep trouble as giving people lifts home was quite illegal. Consequently he had to adopt his own son and his wife was treated as a scarlet woman who had betrayed her husband while he was fighting. She could not even tell her own family until after the war.
