I was 15 when the war started and I was living in Manchester. The 1st part of the war was the phoney war when nothing much happened. Aswe got through into 1940 spring/summer we first experienced an airraid. Up to that point the only thing that reminded us of the war was the blackout. I will never forget the first time I heard bombs falling and soon after that they started the Blitz picking out Cathedral Cities and industrial towns.
In 1942 I joined the Army and did my Basic Training in Bovington Camp, Dorset. Training lasted aprox 8 months.
After training I joined the Inns of Court which were armoured cars and I trained from there to go out to North Africa and Italy. I never actually got out there because that part of the war had come to an end.
For the next year I was training for what was to become the Invasion of Europe. I went through Europe and ended up with crossing the Rhine. On 7th May 1945 VE Day minus one, along with less than a dozen other men we went and liberated the Hague and after 6 weeks there I went back to Germany and spent the next 2 years in the Military Government of the City of Cologne
