As an Eight year old I was at a junior school.Quite often we had 'Air Raid Drills'.
The Air Raid Shelter was at the top of the school playground yard. The orders were that when we heard the bell go we would all stand and form lines of two's outside our classrooms,in a quiet and orderly fashion. Then each classroom teacher would lead her class to the Shelter."NO RUNNING" this was strictly enforced. On one such drill we were walking to the shelter when the local siren went off.My friend and I who were just behind the teacher shouted(almost simultaneaously)"The jerries are coming",and we ran for it. There was bedlam, all these kids dashing for the Shelter, the teacher going ballistic. It turned out that the siren was a false alarm(as happened quite often in the War)When we arrived back in School after the drill,my friend and I received a few whacks of the slipper on our backsides.
