After traveling from Iraq we had at last pulled into our allocated Gun Site. That is the place selected to site our four 3.7" Ack-Ack Guns.
Several things had been a shock to our lives being used as we were to taking over sites already fitted out with the essentials of life, the main item was proper toilets.Which had not now got.We had to devise our own AND keep them clean. The first design (they all had to be passed by the MO) consisted of two petrol tins. These were the usual British Army tins not the more substantial Jerry cans. These were actually 'tins',about ten inches square and eighteen inches deep. These were cut in halves lengthways leaving one half top still attached so that the two halves could be bent outwards formingtwo receptacles into which (so the theory went) liquid waste went into one half and solid into the other. This would give the solid waste a chance to dry out.
