My Granny鈥檚 Experience
Of World War 2
My Granny was twelve, nearly thirteen when the war started. As an evacuee, she was sent from London to a small house in the countryside. As she was used to staying in a boarding school, she was excited because she had some freedom in the countryside. Granny thought it was a big adventure.
Every night she could hear planes flying overhead towards the city of London. These planes bombed factories, where guns and bombs were made. Ports were also targeted to prevent supplies being received or sent. Now and again overhead Granny heard Doodle bugs and was quickly ushered into the bomb shelter.
Granny and her friends would sometimes see fires in the distance, which made them feel sorry for the people living in the area. Everyone carried their own gas mask and had to practice putting it on quickly.
Food was rationed which meant that when you bought food and clothes, an amount of coupons would be taken from your ration book. When coupons ran out, people faced a long wait until they received more. One or two coupons would be given, on special occasions, as a present. While the war was on brides tended to wear ordinary dresses. Shoes and dresses cost about seven coupons each, while a winter coat cost about ten.
By the time the war had finished, Granny had trained to be a nurse. She looked after people with terrible injuries as a result of the war. She has very dear memories of the day the war was declared over. Lots of people gathered outside Buckingham Palace to celebrate.
