This is the interview of Mildred and Amelia, taken place in the longbenton CLC.
Q. How old were you when the war started?
A. We were around 18 years of age.
Q. How did you feel when you found out about the war?
A. The news didn't sink in because of my age.
Q. Did you agree with the war?
A. I definately did not agree with the war. I thought what went in was disgusting. I was glad when it was over.
Q. Was your house bombed?
A. Fortunatley our house did not get bombed. There was a bomb shelter, but it wasn't near by.
Q. Did anyone you know fight in the war?
A. yes my husband fought in the war but he died (both ladies)and they got two medals but I am not sure what for.
Q. Were gas masks gven out?
A. yes, they were.
Q. Did you keep a diary?
A. We didn't have time to keep a diary.
Q. Did you have an I.D card?
A. Yes.
Q. Did you work with weponary?
A. Yes, I worked in Ammunition.
Q. Amelia, did you have ration books?
A. Yes, I think I still have it tucked away at home.
Q. What was rationed?
A. The things that were rationed were: meat, Butter, you got 1 egg a week, sugar, tea, sweet coupons and clothing coupons.
Q. How did you hear about the war?
A. I heard about it on the wireless.
Q. Did you get married during the war?
A. Yes i did, but he has died now.
Q. Mildred, did you have any siblings?
A. Yes, I had 2 sisters, But I am the only one left and I was the youngest
