Margaret as a young girl in 1940-1941, was in a convent, cared for by the nuns at St Michaels convent in Portsmouth. She worked in the laundry room. Monty's clothes would be flown over the Channel at night and Margaret and her friend would wash them (in secret they were given sweets). They had to sign the Official Secrets Act.

It's a nice story, but in 1940-1941 Montgomery was a relatively unknown officer in England, eventually in charge of Southern Command, having arrived back from France on the 1st of June, 1940.

It wasn't until the 4th of August, 1942, that he left Britain to command the 8th Army in Africa, after which, in 1943, he was in Sicily and southern Italy. He was next in France in June 1944.
