As a young girl I lived near to Manston Aerodrome (a fighter station). We would watch the bombers coming from the North and all the fighter planes would meet and then would fly off together towards France. One plane, the Lancaster, brought magnetic mines up from the sea, I was particularly interested in these as my father served on a minesweeper.
Living in Ramsgate, we watched the soldiers arriving back after the evacuation of Dunkirk. Around this time, the children, including my younger brother and sister were evacuated to Stafford. My sister and I were also sent there, but I got a job at DH Dorman (Diesel Engineers), where I met my future husband. We married in 1942 in St George鈥檚 Church, Ramsgate. We had to use the crypt because of the danger from the bombing. At that time my husband had to obtain a permit to get into Ramsgate, not being a resident there.
