I remember going to the Anderson Shelter at the bottom of the garden. Sometimes we all slept under the stairs with a fire-guard over us. We heard the sound of bombs dropping. Mother had her arms up in the air and said ‘God Bless the Kids’. We all thought the school had been hit and shouted ‘hooray — no school!’ However, the school survived and the next day we were told by our teacher not to touch anything or pick anything up in our badly damaged school, as it might be a bomb.
