"A Crazy Rhyme for Christmas Time"

My Dear little children, at this Christmastide
How I wish I could join in the fun at your side
But as it's quite certain that I shan't be home
I'll just be content by sending this poem.
I hope Peter and Jan, you're enjoying your hols,
And sheila is happy at nursing her dolls,
I hope Father Christmas will flit down the flue,
With sacks full of presents for all three of you.
While you are enjoying the good Christmas cheer
I expect I'll be eating the sand-which-is here.
Now you know very well that it never would do
For me to omit 'be good' all three of you.
Be kind, do not quarrel, be quiet as a mouse
At least don't play leap frog all over the house!
I hope you'll enjoy a real nice Christmas dinner
And look like Billy Bunter or just a bit thinner
But remember at tea-time, go slow with the cake
Or you may all end up with a rum-tummy ache
And when the day's over and you've climbed the stairs
To your cosy beds, please remember your prayers.
Ask God to bless Mummy and your Daddy too
And bring him home quickly and safely to you.
Then unless I'm mistaken to me its quite plain
Next year we'll be happy together again.
We'll throw all the blackouts away helter skelter,
Put up all the lights and fill in the old shelter
Plant hollyhocks where artichokes used to grow
And bluebells, not beetroot, will make a fine show.
How nice it will be when we hear Mummy say
"I think we'll all have eggs for breakfast today,
And chicken for dinner and just for a spree
Cream, jelly and lots of iced cake for our tea.
How nice to go picknicking near and afar
With 'Pop' infront driving the old Rover car.
But before all these things can really come true
We've got to bump Hilter off, and Tojo too.
But each day we're getting so very much stronger
That surely the horrid war can't last much longer?
I once met old Hitler, he sat on a cliff
When I gave his schnozzle a terrible biff.
I showed him the edge and ordered him "jump!"
But I fell out of bed with a terrible bump
And I found the cliff was not all that it seemed
And Hitler's big biff was a dream I had dreamed.
But who know's? p'raps one day my dream will come true
and I'll push Hitler over and old Musso too.
Now enough of this nonsense, I'll write again later
Love from 'Daddy' or 'Pop' or should I say 'Pater'?
