I was called up at 19 years old and had never left home before then. I went to Halifax but came home every weekend. After that I went to Barnoldswick and worked on the inlet and outlet valves. When I was 21 I came home for the weekend. On my return the foreman was waiting for me. 'Where were you at the weekend?' he said. 'It was my birthday,' I replied. 'Don't you know there's a war on,' he said.
