It was in the area of the Northern Shan states that an interesting find was made.
Up in the thatch of a native hut was found a pay book belonging to a soldier of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, (who of course were with us.) However the pay book dated from the 1880鈥檚. It had belonged to a member of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers who must have served in the campaign against Burmese King Thibaw who made war on the British in 1885. He was defeated and it was then that Mandalay was captured and in 1886 up at Burma was the next. How the Welsh Fusiliers pay book came to be found up amongst the thatch and rafters of that Burmese hut inspired some interesting theories amongst our lads.
It was handed over to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. I suppose they took it home.
