I was in my early teens during the war. I had four brothers in the forces. Charlie was the eldest, he was in the Tank Core. Then there was Fred in the Air Force. Ron was in the Royal Fusilliers and Les was in the Royal Army Ordnance.
Charlie was injured. He was shot in the foot, he didn't come home though, he was kept in. Ron was killed in Italy. I still remember getting the telegram in 1944.
My Dad fought in the First World War. During the second he worked as Head of Security and was often out during the air raids.
As a boy I thought it was all an adventure, I didn't take it all in.
I remember digging our shelter in the back garden. I was holding the post, and my friend was beating it into the ground with a big sledgehammer. He missed, and hit me right on the head. I had to spend a couple of days in hospital.
I eventually went into the Army also, serving for twenty five years.
