When I was stationed in Scotland, the duchess of Gloucester came and the heavens opened. We stood in the rain for 2 hours. It took us 2 weeks to dry our uniform.
We were near a village next to camp stoney kirk, 3 miles from west freugh. We used to go dancing but had to be back by 10.25pm so wed come back and put our pyjama鈥檚 on top of our uniform before they came round to check. Wed then put our pyjamas on top of our pillows and sneak back out! We used to get back about 12.00ish.
I left Glasgow in 1942 to join the Women鈥檚 Auxiliary Air force in Bridge North. I was on a military train full of people just outside new street in Birmingham when we were caught in a raid. We were stuck for 8 hours.
My first husband was stationed in the merchant navy, he was torpedoed 3 times but managed to survive the war. He sadly past away 3 years after the war finished. My present husband was in the signals and would send messages. He came back from Dunkirk only to be sent to the far east. He fought in lots of famous battles and was still fighting after VJ day.
It was a very happy time and a very sad time.
