I was born in Ashby but happened to be in London during the bombing.
I contracted Polio before the war and was sent to various homes.
We were evacuated to Essex- our gas masks and labels attached to us.
The Germans started to bomb Essex so we were then sent to Torquay.
Bombing started in Torquay — the Education Secretary was on the beach with his son and this was strafed by German planes — he threw himself on top of the boy but was badly hurt himself.
All the boats in the harbour were assembled for Dunkirk — someone let the Germans know what was happening and there was a terrible raid on the harbour.
I then went back to London where they started to send 'Doodlebugs'.
We used to watch them and were very frightened in case they landed on us.
