We were at school when the warnings went, the sirens went and we had to go to the underground shelters or they sent us home.
I left school at 14. Before that during school hours we had the option of working in the fields. I can remember potato picking and removing tiny nettles from onions that they could be used for medicine. We got paid approx 12/6. The farmers let us help ourselves to potatoes - Mum was always pleased. I hated school I did that to get away.
