When I was a little girl aged five my first memory was of being on the coalman鈥檚 horse and cart with the family furniture as we had been bombed out. The family next door had taken a direct hit and all been killed.
We lived in Islington North London and moved to Dulwich, as we have been bombed out. My Dad became an Air Raid Warden and had to make sure the houses were blacked out and no lights showing. My Dad was wounded in the First World War and was hit in the leg by a bullet. He suffered shell shock and had to wear a clubfoot, as his leg was shorter than the other.
We had a big garden and had our own fresh meat supply as my Dad bred rabbits and chickens. When we were short of sugar my Dad took soap to work and swapped it for sugar.
I did not like going into our dug out shelter at night as it used to smell damp and earthy and I was cold and frightened.
One day I was coming home from school and a German plane had got under our barrage
Balloon and I did not understand what was going on but someone pulled me into their garden off the pavement.
