My dad(now living with me) was in southern holland with the BEF when he was told to get to dunkirk. on his way there he lost contact with his mates so he headed to the sea!(he was only about 20 years old and had never beed further than 20 miles from home in his life). he never made it to dunkirk but found himself further up at La Pan. as he looked younger than his years and probably because he looked bewildered, he was looked out for be other soldiers on the beech. when he talks about it you can hear great effection for those men in his voice. (other soldiers who helped him on his way were Indian sikes).having spent 6 days and nights on that beach a sailor(a brave man) swam from a ship out in the water to tell my dad and the others that no more boats were coming and they could eather swim out to the ship or take there chances on the beach. dad along with others swam for it. dad stripped off but others kept there kit etc on. as they wre swimming my dad saw many of his beach mates go under. That ship that got my dad back to england was HMS Wolsey. He woul not go down below on the ship because he was to frightend so he stayed up top and helped with the ammunition for the gunners. this is just a small part of my dads story. I am sure he would love to know if any of his mates are still about or any crew from the Wolsey Whatever happened to them all ??
