Mum told us about living in occupied Italy. She lived in a place called Dragoni. She said the Gestapo marched the streets of the village, 6 or 7 abreast. The Gestapo she recalled were very cruel even to their own men. The story which really sticks in my mind is about a young soldier who forgot to salute to an officer. The soldier was tied up and continually submerged in the river until he died - all because he did not salute.
Some of mum's brothers were in the Italian Army and actually fought against the British. Mum always said that Mussolini was a man of the people, she seemed to ahve a lot of time for him.
