My father, Stan Pomeroy, was a Signals Operator in the above countries, signalling and receiving messages in Morse Code.He spent time in Italy, North Africa and Bahrein chiefly. After the War he typed up his experiences as a diary which is more like a huge sprap book. He called this "Me in the M.E." (middle east) This diary is A3 size and about 3 inches thick in depth. the diary contains my dad's drawings, pen and ink sketches, photographs,(including the King and Churchill) postcards, maps, newspaper cuttings of the people, events and places he visited. For example there are newscuttings fo the eruption of Vesuvius, postcards of Rome and Pompeii, and a programme of an amateur production (drawn by dad and he was also a performer in several shows ("Ain't 'alf hot mum" style.). There are diary extracts of "a day in the life of a signals operator" , "receiving mail from home," trips out, including Rome, Vesusvius and Pompeii,Christmas Days, "having your hair cut in Italy by a non Engllish speaking Italian", "locals catching an octopus," sketches of his tent, and why he didn't like Squadron Leader Thompson.
I think this diary would be of considerable interest to people researching WW2 because it is first hand experience written at the time and because of the wealth of photos and pictures it contains. I will not part with this diary, it's priceless to me, but I am happy to correspond with people who are interested in it as a resource, or possibly people who knew my father.
My dad died 2 years ago.
This diary is a wonderful memory of him.
