I went to Barnsley Road School then to John Street School.

I was about 14 and I started work at Woods Glass Works. I walked along the canal to work. I worked days and afters. The men gathered the glass then they blew the hot glass into a mould. The moulds were bottle shaped and then it was pressed into the mould shapes.

My job was to get the bottles off the belt and inspect them for flaws. The conveyor belt was the full length of the room. Then the bottle went into the packing room. It was always hot.

My dad was in the Home Guard part time. He was a loco driver at Mitchell鈥檚 Main pit. Granddad Cooper had an allotment down there so we got vegetables. My mother stayed at home. My sister had to be put in a gas tent because she was only a baby. There was a pump and you had to keep pumping air into it.

There were about two big brick shelters behind the houses and families had to go in them. We didn鈥檛 use them very often. My Auntie Eleanor used to go and sit in the corner when the siren went off.

The road signs were removed and the railings were all removed in Wombwell.
