My Nanna's first husband, George, was in the 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. Like several of his brothers he was an amateur boxing champion.

George was evacuated from Dunkerque and had to leave various personal posessions behind. One of the items he left was a cup he had won, in which he placed a note reading "Keep your hands off Gerry - to be called for later!"

Sadly George never recovered his prize: he was killed by a sniper's bullet on 27th March 1944 during the battle for Anzio.
