Baby born 04.39 in Breck Road, Liverpool, living over family shop - September war declared 鈥 few months later German BOMBS tried to destroy OUR Liverpool Docks which included Water Towers, and Margaret Street, Everton. The Bombs power blew out the front area of our shop and home in Breck Road. The blast damaged my EAR DRUMS and I became very ill 鈥 (9 months old). Mum searched to find treatment and finally cured me. We moved onto a 鈥淪afer鈥 area and rented a home in Birkenhead 鈥 this was to become a victim of Hitler and we then moved to my grandparent鈥檚 home in Moreton 鈥淪AFE AREA鈥. Living with my grandparents 鈥 the BOMBS struck in Moreton, a piece of piano from the BLASTS hit grandmother and killed her 鈥 12 months later granddad died of 鈥渄isbelief鈥. I think my Mum and my sister and I continued to live in our grandparent鈥檚 home as Daddy had gone away on Voluntary Service. The BOMBS and death was terrible 鈥 there were no shelters for us in Moreton, but we were supplied with a 鈥淐age鈥- it was like a large BIRD CAGE, the size of a double bed and we put a mattress inside of it (it was in the lounge) and we all slept together in 鈥渙ur cage鈥 at night.

The days appeared to me to be normal, having fun etc, but each day we saw more houses flattened by the bombs, right next door and opposite to us had gone, how our home survived I do not know!! I do not know how financially we survived because our business in Liverpool was not active because of the damage - but we did grow food in our garden and had chickens. I remember having Hooping Cough and my Mum used to push my pram along the PROM on Moreton Shore and I still see the BARBED WIRE stretching along the BEACH 鈥 presumably to keep the Germans away. I remember V.E. Day 鈥 we celebrated at Haig Hall Moreton and I can still see and FEEL this lovely young man who carried me home from the 鈥減arty鈥 on his shoulders. It was all so wonderful. But then came the RATIONING- COUPONS for everything, but we never complained just got on with it. I lost my Grandparents through this terrible war but our family was complete and eventually Daddy arrived home.
