Joan Dyball
On the Sunday night that they came over my Auntie got bombed, she was living in flats so she came to us. We were based in Greenwich. When we came out of the shelter one day, we found all the houses that were opposite us had been bombed down and all you could hear were people moaning. When we tried to go back to our house they wouldn’t let us in, it wasn’t safe. We never went back into that house. In the end we had to go to what they called ‘the rest centre’ which was a school and we had to stay there until they found us a place to live. I used to go to school and when the sirens went we’d have to go down to shelter. It was horrible really.
