John was 3 when the war was declared and was to young to remeber anything about the day war was declared at the time of the war john was living on the white elms street in ipswich, he had one brother and on sister who's names are ronnie and margret, school was difficult during the war because people were poorer and that mean't that you had to make your school uniform last a long time. His house wasn't bombed and he didn't know of anyone who had their house bombed.

Later on in the war when John was older he had a lot of freinds, he met up with them alot and they used to go down to westbourne hill and dirt slide down on a pice of tin on anything they could get their hands on, he used to go to the cinema with his friend they saw bridge over river quai, casa blanca, angtha cristies 10 littel indians, brief encounter and african queen, the sorts of clothes that were fashoinable at the time were tight short and trousers boots and socks and they had to make them last and there was a shortage of cloth
