I was only a baby when the war broke out but I remember in a corner by the side of the fire was a large wooden cupboard which reached the ceiling and the bottom drawer was full of my toys. There were wooden blocks, a small bat with a coloured ball on a piece of elastic, a brown knitted bear, a spinning top, a rag doll, small dolls made from pegs, a black wooly golliwog and blackboard and chalks. I was also the proud owner of a doll's pram containing a baby doll with a wobbly china head. She had been a special present from Santa and when I was four I had been so excited that I dropped her on the way down the stairs and her head had broken into pieces. I don't know who cried the most that day, me or my mum. As it was impossible to buy a replacement during the war it was repaired at the doll's hospital and never fitted very well again. However i still loved her dearly.
