My husband, Leonard, was called up from an engineering job. He did his Air Force training, then subsequently was posted to Henlow in Bedfordshire, where there was a big RAF station, and was assigned to making engineering parts for the first jet engine, working with Sir Frank Whittle. In fact, he spent his whole six years of the war working on this project. The work was as urgent (he often had to work at night) as it was confidential, and it is not until after the war that he was free to tell me the nature of his work.
