The rationning started fairly quickly. Things like butter, sugar meat and bananas disappaered of the market. We slept on bails of newspapers while the air raids went on. Air raid shelters were built at the school. Some above ground and some below groud. The only lighting in there was from bicycle lamps. Al we could do was sing. The evacuation of Dunkirk was taking place. It was very frightning. The soilders were nearly all wounded, but we all went to wave to them, to welcome them home. The battle of Britian had began. And there were plenty of dog fights between the british air force and the Germans. We often used to pick up peices of shrapnel on the way to school. Lessons at school were often interupted by air raids, so we had to go to the shelters. We now had gas masks, they caused a laugh. We went to a cafe to pick up some potato cakes that they had been experimenting with. It didnt taste very nice, but when we hadnt got a lot to eat,we just ate it. We got wale meat sausages, these werethe origonal bangers. As once you started cooking them they just exploded all over the place. There was a lot more army camps in the area. We knew they were training for something big. They would soon be inviading Europe. D-DAY came, the invaision of France. We were winning the battle in North Africa and then invaded Sisaly and Italy. The war in the far east was finally coming our way. We had V-1s ,the flying bombs. All the while we could hear you were safe, but if the sound stopped, you knew they were coming down to explode. The air raids were getting less and we were able to sleep in our beds again. Bombs fell on the town killing several people. There is more tales to tell but really we havent got time
