we lived in a small village called edingley in nottinghamshire. we had no warnings of any hostilities that would be directed towards us. but every night we put up black out shutters.if my father heard the german eroplanes approaching he would carry me down staires and the whole family would hide under the stairs until they had gone. but this particular night the german plane drop a bomb somwhere in the locallity the result was the blast blew a section of roof of the house. after that that bedroom was allways refered to as the bomb room. it must be rememberd that 2 minuets flying time was the town of newark where there was a ball bearing factory. so wheather the pilot of the plane just jetisoned a bomb we shall never know.i often think to myself why we should go under the staires but in those days that was the way it was
