I was aged 13 in 1941/42, and I moved to Epping because we were too close to the Weald Aerodrome. My Father was called up to the forces too. Whilst at Chigwell a Doodle Bug hit the railway station and broke all the windows in the home while we were away.
I was working in Woolworths during the War and and so I was exempted from being called up.
I was 18 year old wnen I met my Husband who was aged 17. We met at on the 29th September 1944 and on the 2nd of October he was called up into the Navy. I have been with him for 60 years.
Evacuee's were taken to an area and they were moved away. When I heard that the War would last four years I just cried and cried. I remember enjoying going into the Anderson Shelter and I really enjoyed having some Ham and Tomatoes.
There were sing alongs too. The bombs were the worst thing of course and the noise of the aircraft. We would go out at night though, life just carried on.
