The following story appears courtesy of and with thanks to The Liverpool Diocesan Care and Repair Association and James Taylor.

You were only allowed one egg a week on the ration book. I remember my son coming home from the Navy. I went into Scotts and asked her could I have an egg as the lad was coming home. She said 鈥淚鈥檓 sorry, but you鈥檝e had your rations.鈥 So we had to do without.
I remember when our house was bombed and we were going to live in Speke. Well, your ration book had to be given in. I went into Scotts and I was getting my rations, when the woman said 鈥淥h you can鈥檛 have any rations.鈥 I asked her why, because my books had been given in there.
I took the books, and the kids, and walked out of the shop. I asked someone how to get to Garston, because there was a food office there that dealt with complaints. I explained that I had not been allowed food. So she just picked up the phone, and started talking to the woman in Scotts 鈥 鈥淒on鈥檛 dare tell this woman that she can鈥檛 have anything. Her books are here and she is entitled to anything she needed in the shop.鈥
So I felt brave, and I got back on the bus, and went straight back to the shop. I had only been in Speke for a day so I thought; oh, she wont remember me, - oh, didn鈥檛 she!
I was just going to get served when I heard a voice say, 鈥淚s your name Lloyd?鈥 I said 鈥淵es.鈥 鈥淲ell there鈥檚 a lady over there that wants to speak to you.鈥
鈥淪he can鈥檛 know me love, I only came to Speke yesterday鈥 I said. I looked up and there鈥檚 this woman sitting in one of those boxes up high, you know, where they take the money. She was calling me over. I knew what it was 鈥 well, she wiped the floor with me 鈥淗ow dare you report me鈥 she said. I told her I needed the food for the kids and she wouldn鈥檛 give it to me, what was I supposed to do?
Anyway, we got on like a house on fire after that and it did her good.
