Towards the end of the war I was based in Norwich. It was a super town. I lived near to where Coleman's mustard factory was bombed.
We were very busy here. We had one girl who was always going absent without leave - AWOL.
Once we caught her at a local fair. She had been noticed because she was wearing HMS shoes with her civilian clothes. Each time we took her back to barracks with a warning, but she would go AWOL again.
I had to go to her house accompanied by a local policeman. The house was very dirty. and there were ferrets in the hearth!
Eventually she was given a dishonourable discharge from the services
