My uncles were in the Home Guard and they went twice a week to Medstead to the Village Hall. Sometimes they acted as wardens and walked round the village making sure lights were out.
Canadians and American ‘squaddies’ took over the big house at Bighton for their headquarters. They also took over the village school for a couple of weeks before D Day. There were troops camped in Bighton Wood.
We heard Lord Haw Haw on the radio and I remember Alva Liddell reading the news.
I remember clothing coupons, and food coupons. My Father used to go shopping on the bus to Alton and if there was queuing to do he did it.
