[This story was submitted to the People’s War website by a volunteer from ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cambridgeshire on behalf of Barbara Clarke and has been added to the site with her permission. Mrs Clarke fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.]

I remember the Mill Road bomb, when a friend had to come home with me because she couldn’t get back to her own house.

I remember how I would take the baking round to my gran’s house, and one day, as I was making my usual delivery, there was machine gun fire in the street from an aircraft near the gas works and Newmarket Road (near the railway line) and it hit the kerb nearby.

I also remember the parties we had on VE and VJ days — I remember I was working at Mitcham’s at the time, and we danced the night away on Parker’s Piece and Christ Pieces, dancing round the middle of the bandstand!
