We had only had about 3 daytime raids until then so this was quite unusual.
On this occasion, the sirens which usually went off immediately, weren't quick enough. By the time we reached the back door to go out to the Andersen Shelter, we saw the German bomber directly overhead and then I saw the bombs - two or three of them - falling from the plane. The thing that surprised me about the bombs is that they fell, not straight down as I thought they would, but at an angle.
There was no time to get to the shelter so my mother quickly pushed me under the kitchen table and them my father pushed my mother under too.
The bombs fell on the neighbouring street. It was a direct hit on an air raid shelter where some girls from my school were sheltering. Sadly they were all killed.
