Because we were watch keepers we were on at different times — we were on a four week rotation. I liked it when you had your days free as you could go exploring and have a look round Kent.

Fortunately my friend had a good sense of direction so we always got back in time for our next shift, as there were no signs around; and you didn’t dare ask for directions from anybody.
