We lived at 146 Sandy Road, but moved to 10 Chestnut Road; unfortunately our previous house and its occupants were blown up.
One night we were in our anderson during an air raid, when the shelter caught the blast. We were trapped and the firemen had to rescue us. We found that our house had been blown up and the top was completely missing, except for my brother, Tom鈥檚, bedroom. He had been sleeping in there and was trapped by part of it but had managed to free himself.
We had to move to 12 Pennington Road, and Chestnut Road was completely sealed off as it was unsafe, but my dad had 25 hens in the back garden. The police wouldn鈥檛 allow us in, as looters were taking stuff, so I had to sneak and crawl into the garden to feed and water the hens, as they had not been fed for two days.
