In nineteen forty one after spending eighteen months wondering why some very angry Germans were coming over my house every night and dropping tons of bombs on me in an attempt to prevent me reaching my ninth birthday my mother belated decided to allow me to be evacuated.

There was one condition that she insisted upon and it was that I should be accompanied by my next door neighbour, Derek, who was one year older than me. I didn't like Derek very much because he always had a runny nose which he insisted wiping on his sleeve leaving snail trails from his wrist to his elbow.
