Ruth, Mary and Hannah Bennett in their Land Army uniforms.
I was born and brought up in Fulham London. but my father got a job designing the Bennett Brick works at Kempston Hardwick and we all moved to Bedfordshire.
When war broke out I had been working at Liptons in Bedford as a cashier, my sister Ruth was already a Land Girl and the idea of the outdoor life quite appealed to me. I made enquiries at the recruitment office and quite soon I was sent to a training farm, owned by Harrold Brown in Great Barford near Bedford.
I was asked to stay on as permanent staff. This involved milking cows very early in the morning (and moving them across the farm), also working with horses and walking them up and down. I learnt to drive a tractor and was then able to plough. I have some very fond memories of this as we had fun times driving these and aiming for spots in the distance when learing to drive them. I had lodgings in the village. After about 3 years I moved to a farm in Kempston, and lived in Tavistock Street, Bedford, with my parents. Near the end of the war I got gingivitus, a desease of the gums and had to travel to Kempston everyday, which was rather troubling.
There were many dances with American troops at their air bases. that I did attend and wasn't interested in as I was engaged. As it happened my boyfriend was killed in Germany the day after the war officially ended.
I served in the Land Army from 1942-1947.
