My father-in-law John McKee worked in the linen industry during the war and was based at Moygashel outside Dungannon. On one occasion during the war he had to take his car and a trailer to do a delivery in Armagh city.At that time you were only allowed petrol for your car if it was being used for work. On the way back from making his delivery he saw about a dozen American soldiers thumbing a lift towards Dungannon. Being a public spirited man and wanting to do his bit for the American visitors he stopped and offered to take 3 passengers in the car. To his surprise not only did he get 4 passsengers in the car the others all piled into the trailer. He explained to them that he was only going to the Moy which is half way to Dungannon. They assured him that was fine and off they set. When they got to the Moy one of the Ameraican soldiers pulled a gun on my father-in-law and told him to take them to Dungannon. Frightened for himself he duly drove on to their barracks in Dungannon where they insisted he not drop them at the gate but he was to drive them right in. He did so and was told to wait where he was. 2 minutes later out came 2 of the Americans with hands filled with chocolates which they handed to him with their sincere thanks for the lift. That was an experience my father-in law never forgot.
