We were flown into Imphal as reinforcments for the 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment in 1944, previously I had belonged to the 70th Battalion the Welch Regiment, which was disbanded after arrival in India, and a spell at Deolali camp. By this time, of course, the Japanes were well in retreat but still putting up quite a lot of resisance. The planes we flew into Imphal in, were Dakotas, flown by American airmen. I was a wireless man, in fact I was in some form of communications for most of the war ever since joining up in 1942, when I was just over 18 years of age, the age limit having, I believe been lowered to 18 in that year. My brothe, John Thomas Griffth was also in the R. C. of Signals but on the Arakan front, and I had another brother ,Alun, who was in the 2nd Batt. Royal Welsh Fusiliers (D-day+8) He avoided injury and returned home shortly after I was repatriated.
To be continued -(if you like.)
Kindest regards,
Idris Griffith.
