I was 10 years old and living in Elwell Avenue, Barwell, when the war started. We had an air raid shelter at the bottom of our garden. I can remember being in it when a bomb fell on Kirkwell Road. The next day we went to where the bomb fell and dug up bits of shrapnel. I also remember when an Aeroplane was shot down in Everard鈥檚 Field.
Everyday we had to walk to school with our gas masks, although I started work when I was fourteen. I remember the rationing too, like only getting 2oz of chocolate and having to eat spam and there being coupons for your clothes.
