Staffs County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.
During the war (1941) my father came home on leave unexpectedly. I was nine years old a the time. I was sent to fetch some oatcakes for Sunday morning breakfast. I went into Chesterton. The weather was dull and dreary. On the way home, I heard the noise of an aeroplane flying fast and low. I glanced up and saw this twin engine aeroplane, dark grey in colour with a white disc on the tail. Then I carried on walking home. Seconds later, there were several explosions and bombs fell on the corona pop factory in Chesterton. There were fatalities. I was told the reason this factory was targeted was that the bombing happened before blackout time when all lights should have been covered but in fact the lights in the factory were switched on due to the dismal weather conditions.
